How to perform migration in Exchange Server?

Exchange Server migration can be best described as the process of migrating the user mailboxes from an Exchange based system to another Exchange based system. This process simply moves the mailboxes from the source computer to the target computer while maintaining a copy of the data that is being transferred at the original location as well. Migration can be performed between the Exchange Server mailboxes of same organizations or between different organizations also.

How Exchange Server Migration can be performed?
Depending upon the needs and requirements of the organizations and the version of Exchange they are using i.e. if organizations are using Exchange server 2003, 2007, 2010 versions or Hosted Exchange then there are three different types of migration processes that the organizations can perform:
  1. Cutover Exchange Migration (Simple Migration): The Cutover Exchange migration is basically meant for small organizations those looking for a quick cutover with no coexistence from their present Exchange environment to Exchange online. Using this type of migration, user can migrate up to 1,000 mailboxes from their present Exchange organization to the Exchange online.

  2. Staged Exchange Migration: The Staged exchange type of migration suits best for those organizations that are looking for a shorter period of coexistence from their current Exchange mail environment to Exchange online. It enables you to move some of the mailboxes to Exchange online and maintains other on your current Exchange environment.

  3. Hybrid Deployment Migration: The Hybrid Deployment migration facilitates the users to view the free/busy information for Exchange online users.
Any of these migrations can be performed using the appropriate tools which are either embedded within the Exchange server or with the help of some external utilities or methods.

Across which domains the Exchange migration can be performed and How?
The mailboxes maintained within exchange databases can be migrated to the mailboxes of different formats such as from Exchange database (EDB) in to PST; from EDB of one Live Server to another; from OST in to PST, EML, MSG or Live Exchange Server; migration of Live Exchange Server to Office 365 or offline EDB files to Office 365. Let us gather some more details about all these migrations:

Migration from Exchange databases (EDB) to PST:
To cope up with the situations such as corruption of Exchange database, accidental or deliberate deletion of mailboxes in EDB database or need of accessing emails from a new location, etc. the exchange mailbox can be migrated to an easy to access and MS Outlook importable PST mailbox.

In order to migrate the mailboxes from EDB to PST, the user can choose to export single or multiple mailboxes within a single migration cycle. Additionally, the migrated mailboxes can be saved either in a newly created PST or an already existing one.

Migration of Exchange Database (EDB) to a Live Server or from one Live Server to another:
It is quite a common scenario that the exchange servers are time to time upgraded to a latest or higher version or the employee is relocated from one premise to some another. In such a case, the migration of mailbox of one exchange server environment to another becomes the need of hour. A user can migrate data items from one mailbox to another between the two live exchange servers (version of Exchange does not matter) and even public folders.

Furthermore, the Exchange public folders can also be easily converted into Office 365 mailboxes. Also, user can migrate multiple mailboxes simultaneously from offline EDB to Live Exchange.

Migrating OST into PST:
Due to the occurrence of some mishap like sudden accidental deletion of Exchange mailbox or user account deletion, etc. the user is left only with the OST file. In such a case, the mailbox maintained within the OST file can be converted into MS Outlook importable PST file. The OST files can be migrated and saved into PST, EML, MSG or Live Exchange Server.

Migration to Office 365:
To deal with the situations similar to those mentioned above (erroneous situations) under which the user is compelled to perform migration, one can also migrate the Live Exchange server and Offline EDB files to Office 365. Additionally, if need be, the data items from OST or PST can also be copied to the Office 365 mailbox.
